People ask us

Do I need permission to fell a tree?
If it has a Tree Preservation Order or is in a conservation area, you may need council permission. Larger-scale work may also need a felling licence. The tree surgeon dealing with the job will check what applies locally before work begins.
Tree felling vs tree surgery, what's the difference?
Felling means cutting the whole tree down and removing it. Tree surgery is the broader term, pruning, crown reduction, crown thinning, deadwooding and health treatments. We can arrange both.
How long does it take?
Small tree: an hour or two. Medium: half a day. Large, complex: a day or more. Stump grinding adds time. The written quote will set out the expected timing.
What about the mess?
Branches chipped on site. Timber logged and stacked for firewood if you want it. Everything removed if you don't. Site left clean, you'd struggle to tell we were there.
Are you insured and qualified?
Every job is handled by a qualified tree surgeon carrying public liability insurance. The tree surgeon can provide the relevant insurance and qualification details for your job.
Can you work near buildings or power lines?
Yes. Tell us about the access, nearby buildings and any power lines. We will arrange a tree surgeon equipped for sectional dismantling, rigging or utility coordination where required.
Do you do scheduled repeat work?
Yes. Tell us whether you need a one-off visit or repeat maintenance. We can arrange scheduled inspections, pruning and ongoing tree work.

Tree felling, what you need to know

Tree felling, also called tree removal, is the process of cutting down a tree and bringing it to the ground. It is different from general tree surgery, which covers tree pruning, crown reduction, crown thinning, deadwooding, hedgerow maintenance and tree health work. Felling is usually done because a tree is dead, diseased, dangerous, or in the way of building work. Sometimes healthy trees need to come down too, if they are outgrowing a space, blocking light, or causing subsidence. We can also arrange formative pruning, maintenance pruning and safety work to remove dead or hazardous branches.

How a tree surgeon fells a tree

There are two main methods. Straight felling is used when there is enough open ground for the tree to fall in one piece. The tree surgeon cuts a directional notch at the base of the trunk, sometimes called a face cut or gob cut, then makes a back cut on the opposite side. The hinge wood between the two cuts guides the tree as it falls. A felling lever or wedges help if the tree needs encouragement. Sectional felling, also called sectional dismantling, is used in tight spaces, near buildings, or when there is no clear drop zone. The climber works from the top down, cutting branches and trunk sections and lowering them on ropes. This takes longer than straight felling but is safer when space is limited. Both methods need proper training. Every job is handled by a qualified tree surgeon carrying public liability insurance.

Permits and regulations

Before any tree comes down, the legal position needs checking. If the tree has a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) or sits in a conservation area, you may need permission from the local council. Larger-scale work may also need a felling licence from the Forestry Commission. The tree surgeon dealing with the job will confirm what applies before work begins.

What happens to the waste

After the tree is down, branches can be put through a wood chipper on site and the timber cut into manageable lengths. You can keep the logs for firewood or ask for everything to be removed. The wood chip can also be left for garden mulch. If the stump needs to come out, ask for stump grinding in the enquiry so it can be included in the quote.

Tree felling and removal cost

Tree felling cost depends on the tree, the safe working method and the access. Height, girth, how close it is to buildings or power lines, and whether stump grinding is included all change the quote. Access is usually the big one. If vehicles and equipment can get close, the work is faster. If timber must be lowered over a roof or carried through a house, it takes longer. The tree surgeon will provide a written quote covering labour, equipment, waste and timing before the job starts. Call 07503 512953 or send the details below.

Where we work

TreeFellingNearMe covers Northern England. Start with the city page nearest the tree for local tree felling, tree removal, stump grinding and emergency tree work. The first coverage areas are Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool, Sheffield, Newcastle, Preston, York, Sunderland, Durham and Carlisle. Coverage depends on local availability and the equipment the job requires.

Local checks

Tree rules are applied locally. Conservation areas, Tree Preservation Orders, access restrictions and waste arrangements can differ between councils and jobs. The tree surgeon can check the relevant council records, site access and permissions before anybody picks up a saw.

Start with your nearest city

Each city page covers local tree felling, tree removal, stump grinding, access issues and permission checks. We are starting with ten areas rather than publishing thin pages for every town at once.
